CINEC crowned 'WiLAT Walk' champions

CINEC Maritime Campus was crowned champions at the float competition of WiLAT Walk - “Striking a Balance in Logistic and Transport Sector” held last month.

CINEC displayed the concept of Maritime and Supply Chain Management in the float and added value to the main theme assigned by the WiLAT (Women in Logistics and Transport) of Chartered Logistics and Transport. This was a competition among three institutes namely Moratuwa University, Kothalawala Defence University and CINEC, and was organized by WiLAT.

Maritime sector has been represented by Marine Engineering cadets and officer cadets of CINEC. Supply Chain Management has been represented by Diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate students of all faculties and department of CINEC.

The Project leader Wajira Ratnayake explaining the success story said, “We all worked as a team since the day we decided to contest until we really won. The management of CINEC provided all the support and guidance. It has been a fun time for students and they learnt many things that they cannot learn in the class room environment. More importantly throughout the process they got the exposure to improve their soft skills. There we had won even before going for the competition.

Supply Chain Management consists of five major components. Plan; Source; Make; Deliver; and Return. Therefore our students focused on these aspects using posters and models in this float. In securing display materials we announced a “Poster and model competition” among students.

Students were given full freedom to decide the type of poster or model individually or in groups. The evaluation criteria were, (a) Relevance to the concept 50 percent, (b) Presentation quality 20 percent, (c) Minimum cost 15 percent, and (d) Convenience of Move-ability 15 percent.

CINEC is one of Sri Lanka’s largest private higher education institutes dedicated to quality education. Over 19,000 students annually follow a range of over 185 educational and training programs in the institute. The Campus situated in the picturesque suburbs of Malabe in close proximity to Sri Jayawardenapura and has branches in Nugegoda, Trincomalee and Jaffna.

China Shipping makes Colombo a Hub Port for the Indian Subcontinent

China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) operated vessel "CSCL Vancouver" made her inaugural call at the CICT Terminal in Colombo on the 19th of April 2015. This is the first CSCL operated vessel to call the port of Colombo in almost 7 years. This vessel is one of five CSCL vessels that have been deployed in their West African Express service, operating from West Africa to China.

Ceyline Neptune Shipping Pvt Ltd, as agents for CSCL in Sri Lanka have worked very closely with the CSCL Regional office in Dubai, CSCL Office in India and all other stakeholders such as the Chinese container terminal in Colombo CICT, to convince CSCL to make Colombo the hub port for the Indian Subcontinent (ISC) region.

CSCL services will connect Sri Lankan importers and exporters to China, Japan, Australia and Mediterranean destinations. The CSCL ISC agents have begun a collaborative effort to achieve the goal of bringing CSCL’s ultra large vessels (19,000teu) to Colombo to serve this region.

Revamped and Rebranded Fiji Maritime Academy Opens under CINEC management

“It is a proud day for Fiji. It is a proud day for FNU (Fiji National University). It is a proud day for CINEC.”

These words of the Prime Minister of Fiji, Honourable Josaia Voreqe Baininarama, summed up the pride and glory shared on the day of the launch of ‘Fiji Maritime Academy’.

On this momentous day the brand name Fiji Maritime Academy (FMA), FMA logo, flag, anthem and a new website was launched amidst pomp and glamour. It also marked the commissioning of the Simulator Complex consisting of the state-of-the-art Marine Bridge Simulator and Engine Room Simulator. A tree planting ceremony followed to leave an indelible footprint and a growing legacy of CINEC in Fiji.

The historic ceremony to herald a new beginning was attended by the Prime Minister of Fiji as the Chief Guest, Ministers, the Diplomatic Corps of many countries, Academia, members of the Judiciary and the military, high-level executives and directors of companies, sports personalities, maritime stakeholders, parents, students and the staff of FMA to make it one of the best attended, most memorable functions in Fiji. Capt.Ajith Peiris graced the occasion representing CINEC.

The launching of FMA along with a complete restructure of the organization is an initiative of CINEC.

FMA Board Chairman, Attorney-General of Fiji, Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum in his message stated….

“Today, we celebrate our partnership with a renowned Sri Lankan organisation, the Colombo International Nautical and Engineering College, CINEC.

As you know, before last year, the School of Maritime Studies was struggling. The quality of the education students were receiving made it difficult for them to find jobs on the international market. They were not able to compete with graduates from other programs in countries like Australia and New Zealand.

However, since CINEC has taken over management of the academy, in January 2014, it has been remarkable how quickly they have been able to raise the standards of the program.

The academy now offers students world-class training and education. I cannot overstate the huge benefits this will have for Fiji. Or overstate how important this is for our people – and especially those living on Fiji’s outer islands. Because as an island nation, we rely on maritime services to carry us over the seas and to transport the cargoes on which our economy and wellbeing depend.”
